addiction/ compulsive/ out of control behaviour

Many of us think we know what addiction is but it is actually a far more complex condition than many people realise.

For some, the term addiction or addict can be a highly useful way to understand what they are experiencing whereas for others it may not seem quite so straight forward. “Addiction” covers a spectrum of behaviours, attitudes and coping reponses but is broadly defined as “the compulsive use of a substance or engagement in a behaviour (process or behavioural addiction) and an inability to stop despite experiencing repeated negative consequences.”

Whether you define yourself as an addict or not, if you feel that you fall anywhere on that spectrum, I am here to tell you that it doesn’t have to be this way and that there is a way out if you feel ready and are willing to make some changes.

Counselling can help you assess and make sense of your current situation and to start taking back some control. Initially this may be about stabilising your situation so that you can start to make some informed choices and also to explore any ambivalence you may be feeling about the changes you plan to make. Counselling can also help you to develop the tools and strategies you will need to start gaining some control and to explore what “recovery” options might be right for you. Just as crucially counselling can also help you explore the underlying reasons why you might have found yourself in this situation in the first place.

Whether you are just considering the possibility of making some changes or you have many years of recovery experience I am 100% committed to supporting you to define and achieve your goals.
