In recent decades, we have seen a steady increase in the prevalence of “club” or “party” drug use and in more recent times a significant rise in drug and sex linked behaviour often referred to as “chemsex”,“chemfun”,“hi fun”,“party and play” etc. Although having sex under the influence of drugs is hardly a new thing, theintentional use of drugs such as crystal meth, GHB, mephedrone etc specifically to facilitate or enhance the sexual experience along with rise of “hook up” apps has given rise to a phenomenom which is not quite so easy to place on the “addiction” spectrum.

I have many years experience supporting clients looking to address their partying and/or chemsex behaviour and have worked in partnership with many pioneering world class services in London, such as the Club Drug Clinic, 56 Dean St sexual health service. For several years I was manager at the Antidote LGBTQ+ drug and alcohol service in charge of developing a variety of primary care interventions, 1:1 support and counselling and numerous groupwork programmes all of which are still in operation to this day.
